As in some stories you might begin with a question mischievous: "You want the good news first or do you want first the bad ?. The good news is that a study published in Rheumatology concluded that the homeopathic treatment provides measurable clinical benefits in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The second is that these effects are attributable to the consultation process itself and not the homeopathic remedy administered. E 'Sarah O'Brien (School of Medicine, University of Southampton) that, in the article that appeared last week on Rheumatology, come to this conclusion. This is a controlled, randomized clinical trial involving 56 patients with stable RA and followed for six months. Patients were divided into two groups - the first visit with homeopathic and subsequent randomization into three subgroups: individualized homeopathic treatment, treatment with complex remedies (Rheumaselect, Dreluso) and placebo - the second without consultation with homeopathic and subsequent randomization into two groups (placebo and remedy the complex). The primary outcome of the study was a 20% improvement in ACR criteria and the personal assessment of the patient.
The study results showed an overall improvement only the first group of patients (with homeopathic visit), with no clear difference in the type of treatment used. The dissemination of these results has created a reaction, bypassing the cerebral cortex, seems to have taken the shortcut emotional amygdala: jubilant words by opponents of homeopathy, the disenchantment of those who had said "it is not true but I believe it," removal of the brutal and outraged purists.
seems to us that, as in the old advertising "smooth, sparkling or Ferrarelle", instead it is necessary to strike a balance, focus on the issue, nor without the short-sightedness of some, nor the hallucinations of others. In fact the article clearly see Sarah Brian suffers from two internal limits, as indeed the authors themselves point out. First, the population is clearly very small in number to describe the different outcomes that aim. The conclusions are therefore strongly challenged by a significant under-recruitment of patients. The second criticism is that the evaluation of the clinical activity of rheumatoid arthritis, especially if you use additional treatments is a difficult art because there is no gold standard of reference, even the two used in this study (ACR20 and DAS- 28).
That question is even more complex is suggested by the almost simultaneous publication of a study at Johns Hopkins University published in the Journal of Pain, which states that patients with rheumatoid arthritis who can count on the support of a loving husband or a wife suffer less pain and have better mobility than the single, or those engaged in a difficult marriage.
So it seems that, to see whether the homeopathic visit in itself brings a special advantage, is not currently possible to simplify, shorten, outline, standardize clinical pictures such as rheumatoid arthritis, so complex and variable in themselves. Sure Brian Sarah may amend the shortcomings of this study demonstrate, in other diseases and with numbers more convincing that the clinical benefits observed are due to the homeopathic consultation process itself.
But then who will also find reassurance , to give just one example, mice that Paul Bellavite for their anxiety, and then experimentally induced controlled by the administration of Gelsemium 15CH, you need not do anything else. Not even to "go talk to someone." Source: Omeopatia33.it - Rheumatology, 2010
